I bought the plans for this chair because it was unique, and looked like something I would like to have for my own use. The designer has built over a thousand Adirondak chairs in 30 plus years. He was not happy with their strength and comfort. He recently realized that he could design his own chair. This is the result. I deviate slightly from the plans, by using mortice and tenon joinery instead of screws. I like the cleaner look. Some of the joints were challenging, but I enjoy learning.
The chair is built with 2 inch dimensional lumber, and carriage bolts, so it is incredibly strong. The seat is contoured, and the back is barrel shaped with “S” shaped back slates. This makes the chair comfortable for setting long periods of time. The comfort and back support is well worth the added effort. I really appreciate the rollers when I move the chair, which is more often than I expected.
I like a penetrating oil stain finish. It seals the wood from moisture, shields the wood from UV radiation, and is easy to apply. The finish will not crack or peel. Refinishing is simple. Just clean the chair surfaces, and apply a thin coat with a rag. No sanding, scrapping or finish removal is required.
